Angle grinders are indispensable tools — and one of the most dangerous. A sudden kickback, a cracked wheel, or a moment of inattention can cause devastating injuries. Here's how to use grinders safely and avoid becoming a statistic.
Inspect Every Wheel Before Use
Ring test every new cutting and grinding wheel before mounting. Hang the wheel on a finger or pencil and tap lightly with a plastic mallet. A cracked wheel makes a dead sound. Never use a wheel that rings oddly — the difference between a good wheel and a cracked one is audible. Inspect wheels for chips, cracks, or any visible damage before every use.
Match the Wheel to the Job
Use cutting wheels only for cutting — not grinding or side sanding, which apply forces the wheel isn't designed to handle. Grinding wheels are designed for peripheral use; cutting wheels are designed only for face cutting. Check the RPM rating on the wheel — never exceed it. A 4.5-inch wheel rated 13,300 RPM matched to a 10,000 RPM grinder is safe; mounting the same wheel on a 12,000 RPM grinder exceeds its rating.
Guard Position and Body Mechanics
The guard must be positioned between the operator and the wheel at all times. Position your body to the side of the cut, never directly behind — if the wheel breaks, fragments fly in the direction of the cut. Apply gentle, even pressure. Let the wheel do the work — forcing creates heat, slows the cut, and increases kickback risk. Let the grinder come to a full stop before setting it down.
